On-Demand Manufacturing Guidelines and Capabilities
To optimize your parts for on-demand CNC milling, we offer design guidelines that improve manufacturability, aesthetics, and turnaround time. Visit our design guidelines page for details.
Maximum Dimensions
Maximum depth that can be milled is 2 in. (50.8mm) from either side of part. For specific milling dimensions by material, see maximum part extents for machining.
| Material | US | Metric | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-axis** | ABS Acetal | 10 in. x 14 in. x 1.75 in. | 254mm x 356mm x 44.5mm |
| 3-axis** | ABS Acetal Nylon | 22 in. x 14 in. x 0.75 in. | 559mm x 356mm x 19.1mm |
| 3-axis** | Aluminum | 22 in. x 14 in. x 3.75 in. | 559mm x 356mm x 95.3mm |
| 5-axis | Hard metals* Brass | 10 in. x 7 in. x 1.75 in. | 254mm x 178mm x 44.5mm |
| 5-axis | Copper | 10 in. x 7 in. x 2.75 in. | 254mm x 178mm x 69.9mm |
| 5-axis | Aluminum Plastic | 10 in. x 7 in. x 3.75 in. | 254mm x 178mm 95.3mm |
Minimum Dimensions
Maximum depth that can be milled is 2 in. (50.8mm) from either side of part. For specific milling dimensions by material, see maximum part extents for machining.
| US | Metric | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 0.25 in. x 0.25 in | 6.35mm x 6.35mm |
| Nominal Thickness | 0.040 in. | 1.02mm |
Threading
We currently support UNC and UNF threads from #2 up to 0.5 in., and metric threads from M2 to M12. Avoid modeling internal threads on your part design.
We also offer the following for milled parts:
- Coil inserts
- Key inserts
Tolerances
Typically, Othala can hold a machining tolerance of +/- 0.0002 in. (0.005mm).
Radii
Sharp inside corners on a part will be radiused (rounded) as a natural result of the CNC machining process. Resulting radii will be identified on your quote.

Quick-turn Finishing
Here are the requirements to qualify for quick-turn finishing:
- Aluminum 6061/6082 and 7075 material eligibility
- Threaded holes plugged
- No masking available
High-requirement Finishing
If your project requires ISO 9001 or ISO 13485 compliance, our in-house precision machining provides a reliable solution. We manage complex anodizing and plating requirements internally, and we routinely process specialized materials such as titanium and nickel, providing complete material certificates on request. For extended manufacturing processes, we rely on a qualified network of partners to fulfill your complete engineering requirements.
Surface Finish Machined Parts
Typically, we break (debur) the edges on all machined parts. All machined plastic parts are left as-machined, which may leave visible tool marks. Some metal parts, on the other hand, allow more choice. Parts left with sharp edges should be handled with care.

What is On-demand Manufacturing?
On-demand manufacturing is a production strategy where goods are made only after a customer places an order, contrasting with traditional “make-to-stock” methods. This approach eliminates the need for forecasting demand and holding large inventories, significantly reducing storage costs and the risk of overstocking. This model is often facilitated by technologies like CNC machining, 3D printing, and laser cutting
This shift towards on-demand production offers numerous benefits to businesses. By producing only what is needed, companies minimize waste and optimize resource allocation. The ability to quickly adapt to market changes and customer preferences provides a competitive edge in today’s dynamic marketplace.
