CNC Milling Design Guidelines and Capabilities

Optimizing your CNC milling designs with our guidelines can improve manufacturability, enhance aesthetics, and reduce production costs and lead times. Consult our essential guidelines for CNC milling design.

Maximum Dimensions

Maximum depth that can be milled is 2 in. (50.8mm) from either side of part. For specific milling dimensions by material, see maximum part extents for machining.

Threading

We currently support UNC and UNF threads from #2 up to 0.5 in., and metric threads from M2 to M12. Avoid modeling internal threads on your part design.

We also offer the following for milled parts:

Tolerances

Typically, Othala can hold a machining tolerance of +/- 0.0002 in. (0.005mm). Part features are recommended to be thicker than 0.004 in. (0.1mm) .

Radii

Sharp inside corners on a part will be radiused (rounded) as a natural result of the CNC machining process. Resulting radii will be identified on your quote.

CNC Milling Materials

We stock more than 30 production-grade plastic and metal materials that are suitable for various part applications and industries.

Quick-turn Finishing

Here are the requirements to qualify for quick-turn finishing:

High-requirement Finishing

Operating under ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certifications, we meet strict requirements for precision contract manufacturing. Our team handles complex anodizing and plating requirements directly in-house. Whether your project involves custom color options or specialized materials such as titanium or nickel, we have the capabilities to deliver your components to print, managing the process internally to maintain control and providing full material documentation when requested.

Surface Finish on Milled Parts

All machined parts are deburred unless otherwise specified. Machined plastic parts retain their as-machined finish, which may include visible tool marks. For metal parts, various finishing options are available. Sharp edges on unfinished parts should be handled with caution.

What is CNC Milling and How Does it Work?

CNC milling, a subtractive manufacturing process, removes material from a secured workpiece of metal or plastic using programmed toolpaths (G-code). Our 3- and 5-axis CNC mills, equipped with diverse tooling, optimize efficiency and throughput. Plastic parts receive an as-milled finish, potentially exhibiting tool marks, while metal parts offer optional finishing processes such as anodizing and chromate plating. Completed parts, with specified surface finishes applied, are then packaged and shipped.

For cylindrical or rotational parts, our CNC turning services may be a better fit. For complex geometries requiring multiple setups, see our 5-axis CNC machining and precision machining capabilities.
